. a firefighter from kane county was killed by her dog inside her home. the body of dawn brown was discovered by her husband, in big rock on monday. he is also a firefighter. he attempted to give her c-p-r, but brown died of her injuries. an autopsy revealed brown had been killed by a 140-pound mastiff. she received the dog from a relative just one week ago. brown had described the dog to her co-workers as *gentle* -- like an overgrown puppy. colleagues at the yorkville fire house say brown was the finest paramedic they have ever known. chicago police are looking for a man who shot another man during a carjacking on the west side. the victim was taken to stroger hospital last night .... after he was turned away from west suburban hospital in oak park .. because the hospital didn't have adequate staffing. police say the victim was a passenger in a car when he and the driver were ordered out near laramie and race. the carjacker shot the passenger in the chest before driving off. the victim is in critical condition. a man from west rogers park will appear in bond court today... charged with the

by as much as $400 million. >> dan: governor brown wants to find new ways to stretch the budget dollar. a meeting on the u.c. regents committee focused on budgets for the next school year. he suggested online courses are a way to keep costs down. he says the passage of proposition 30 offers hope, there is a long way to go to balance the higher education budget. >> so with cuts, we got a lot of cuts. with proposition 30 we have some revenue. at the end of the day, three times more cuts and reductions than there is revenue but together, it pits the state in a very solid position a sustainable balanced budget for years to come. >> dan: governor brown asked to table a proposal to increase tuition for professional grant programs and that averted a protest by student groups. >>> thousands about your house. home sales continue to rebound. about 8,000 were sold last month in the nine county bay area, that is up almost 14% compared to september and 21% compared to a year ago. the only sector not recovering are homes that are selling for less than $300,000 and under water. they are down 15% comp

: the uc regent's finance committee okayed a framework for the 2013/2014 school year. governor brown told the regents, that's unlikely. >> the state would have to increase its general fund commitment to the university 12% every year. that's very unlikely to happen. so you really are proposing tuition increases. >> reporter: officials say without the money or only a portion of tthe university will have to change -- of it, the university will have to change its plans by putting programs in construction or finding ways to raise additional revenue. >> it's a movie i've seen before. and i know how it ends. i don't want to be part of it. >> reporter: lieutenant governor gavin newsom ended up being the lone vote against it. >> tell be more revenue and tuition hikes. i'm concerned about that because the magnitude of that tuition increase is not in-- not insignificant. >> reporter: we won't know if tuition will need to be increased until next summer when the budget is approved. only then will they know how much revenue they're going to need to generation through tuition increases and other cuts.
